I've had it with smug millionaires

You know the type...

  • The poolside YouTube videos
  • The 'anyone can do it' mantra you've heard time and again

It makes me ill, and I can't stand it anymore.

It's not all jealousy 🧐

Sure, I'd love to have millions in the bank.

But, I'd rather hang on to my self-respect, too.

This photo is the closest I’d ever come to showing off. It was taken in April of 2020 when I bought the first new car I’d ever purchased -always been a pre-owned kind of car buyer- at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I’m the kind of guy that would rather live in a box truck converted into a tiny home on wheels. As I write this email, I have a YouTube video running on my Mac Mini by a guy who goes by Nomad Brad. He works as an electrician installing solar panels for others with RVs, tiny homes, etc.

I’d love to do this (not the electrician part…I don’t know a volt from a watt). I’d get rid of all my belongings and take off on an epic road life. I’d shoot videos, write my emails, and just break free.

The only problem with that scenario is Kona, the Wonderdoodle. I share him with my former girlfriend. Still, I wouldn’t have to be far flung across the universe to enjoy this lifestyle. It’s always appealed to me. Now that I’m solo and it looks as if this will be my permanent status, why not?

Who needs a condo, a commute, or a Type-A boss? Not me.

Back to smug millionaires

When I was in medicine, I worked alongside several doctors who enjoyed millions in the bank. They drove Porsches and Lambos, and had a stable of ex-spouses to whom they needed to pay spousal support each month.

They could afford it.

Some thought they were a god, others were just ordinary folks, and you’d never suspect they were wealthy.

When I think of the ultra-rich, I don’t think about them, or the electric car/space company weird guy whose trucks fall apart.

I think of people like Jennifer Garner and Keanu Reeves. Sure, they’re wealthy, but they take the time to aid homeless people they come across (Google Jennifer Garner putting shoes on a homeless guy) or how they never say no to a fan who wants a photo (Google Keanu Reeves).

I’m sure they both have faults, but hey, we all do, right?

Anyway, I’ll bring this email to a close. It was meant to kind of fill in the blanks and let you know who I am.. the Baz behind the emails. I plan to continue these types of emails, just so you know.

Like it, hate it? Got an opinion?

Hit reply and let me know. 😎

Until next time,

Baz✌🏼

“Unlike animals who thrive in a specific niche, like a lion in the Savannah, humans create jackets for the cold and fans for the heat. We’re tool builders and deep generalists.” ~Dan Koe *** Hi all, Baz here, and Happy Thursday! You know, for years, I taught students to niche down and become a big fish in a small pond. It’s not that I got it wrong, it's just that I was a bit off target. Here’s what I think hits the bullseye: 🎯 Blend Your Interests Into a Brand that Makes You a 'Niche of One'...

I was disillusioned with Substack I've been on Substack for a few years and have created and killed about seven—yes, I said seven newsletters there.😳 I've always had an issue with how Substack limits monetization, and I soon found that their email function—while a cool feature—wasn't robust enough. As Substack evolves, bigger names crowd out the attention base of the folks some of us serve. Don't get me wrong—I think Dan Koe's coming to Substack is great. Others of his caliber, such as Jim...

A few comments: I'm now a professional basket weaver! 🧺 OK, just kidding. 😉 Not with my arthritis! However, I've taken some time away from Substack to reflect on my journey over the past few years and to chart my future. I've spent the last year writing a lot of material, and now I'm ready to...
